What is Japanese Tattoo (Irezumi)?

Japanese tattooing — known as irezumi — is one of the oldest and most respected tattoo traditions in the world. Originating in Japan's Edo period (17th–19th century), it developed into a rich visual language combining mythology, symbolism and extraordinary craftsmanship. Today, irezumi is considered by many to represent the pinnacle of tattoo art.

The style is defined by bold black outlines, saturated colours — deep reds, blacks, greens and yellows — and strong symbolic imagery. Japanese compositions are designed holistically: they follow the body's natural lines, balance negative space, and tell a visual story across the skin rather than simply filling a space.

Motifs and Meaning — What Do Japanese Tattoos Symbolise?

Every element of a Japanese tattoo carries meaning. This is one of the qualities that sets irezumi apart — it's not just about aesthetics, but about a narrative written on the skin.

Dragon (ryū) — wisdom, strength, protection. One of the most iconic irezumi motifs, ideal for a sleeve or backpiece.

Koi carp — perseverance, determination, success against the odds. Legend says a koi that swims upstream transforms into a dragon.

Chrysanthemum (kiku) — perfection, endurance, nobility. The quintessential Japanese flower, often combined with other motifs.

Phoenix (hō-ō) — rebirth, immortality, triumph over adversity. A powerful motif for marking turning points in life.

Kitsune (fox) — cunning, transformation, wisdom. The fox spirit of Japanese mythology.

Waves (nami) — the power of nature, the changing tides of fate. A classic background element in Japanese compositions.

Geisha / Bijin — beauty, grace, Japanese femininity. One of the most technically complex figurative motifs.

Neo-Japanese — Tradition in a Modern Style

Neo-Japanese is a contemporary interpretation of irezumi. It keeps the traditional iconography and composition principles but introduces a richer colour palette, more detailed shading and greater artistic freedom. The motifs are the same — dragons, koi, foxes — but executed with a level of painterly detail that wasn't possible in classical tattooing.

Ivan works in both approaches. If you love classic Japanese aesthetics, he'll create traditional irezumi. If you want something more contemporary and painterly, neo-Japanese will suit you better. We'll discuss which direction fits your vision at the consultation.

Ivan Sato — Japanese Tattoo Artist in Wroclaw

Ivan Sato has specialised exclusively in Japanese and neo-Japanese tattooing for 8 years. This is rare — most artists work across many styles. Ivan made a conscious choice to specialise, reaching a level of mastery that only comes from deep focus on a single discipline.

His work is characterised by dynamic composition, precise shading and a rich colour palette. Ivan creates everything from small standalone pieces (koi on the forearm, chrysanthemum on the calf) to large multi-session projects — full sleeves, thigh pieces and backpieces.

FAQ — Japanese Tattoo in Wroclaw

Here are the most common questions from clients interested in Japanese tattooing.

How long does a Japanese sleeve take?

A full Japanese sleeve typically requires 4–8 full-day sessions (approx. 6 hours each), spread over 6–12 months. Ivan plans the entire composition from the start, then executes it section by section — this ensures the design is cohesive from first session to last.

Is a Japanese tattoo painful?

Pain depends on placement, not style. The most sensitive areas are the inner arm, ribs, knee and elbow. The forearm, thigh and upper arm are significantly more comfortable. Ivan takes breaks during longer sessions, and most clients handle 6-hour sessions well with proper preparation — a good night's sleep and a meal beforehand make a big difference.

How long does a Japanese tattoo take to heal?

Surface healing (peeling) takes 2–3 weeks. Full skin healing takes about 2–3 months. During this time it's important to moisturise regularly and avoid direct sun and sunbeds. After full healing, apply SPF 50+ cream throughout summer to keep the colours vibrant.

Can I choose my own motif?

Always. We start with your vision. Ivan will listen to your idea, suggest any technical or compositional adjustments, then create the design. You can request changes to the sketch before the session — we want you to be 100% happy with the design before we begin.

Does Ivan work in black and grey Japanese style?

Yes — black and grey irezumi is increasingly popular. Ivan works in both full colour (with characteristic irezumi reds, greens and yellows) and black-grey versions. The black version often enhances the drama of compositions and works beautifully with dragon, chrysanthemum and wave motifs.

How much does a consultation cost?

Consultation is completely free and non-binding — both in person at the studio and via WhatsApp or email. You can send us photos of your inspiration and describe your idea, and Ivan will reply with an assessment and approximate quote.
